Sunspots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, and age spots, are flat brown, gray, or black spots on the skin that typically appear on sun-exposed areas of the body. They are a visible consequence of skin photodamage and are most commonly found on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms, which are the areas most exposed to the sun. Pigmentation may increase due to an accumulation of melanin, the substance that gives skin its color. While they are most commonly associated with aging and sun exposure, anyone can develop them, especially if they are exposed to a lot of sun or have a history of frequent or intense sunburns.

Prevention is always better than cure, so to avoid the formation of sun and age spots, it is recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even on cloudy days and in the winter. Wearing protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves, and avoiding peak sun intensity by seeking shade during midday hours can also help protect the skin.
